MAYOR'S PLAN FOR. ? TRANSPORT

A plan for enabling E.P.S. members in the city to reach their posts in the suburbs should an alarrn^ be sounded during ordinary busbies* hours was outlined by the Mayor, Mr. Hislop, in an address to the luncheon meeting of the Wellington Returned Services Association today.

He said that the problem of quickly transporting the E.P.S. personnel from city to suburbs would be easy if petrol was available, but if there were no petrol he could not see how the problem would be solved. His scheme was that sufficient petrol should •be made available to enable some E.P.S. cars (not all would be wanted because each car could carry six members) to make daily trips to and from the city. The passengers would know where their cars were parked and if the alarm were sounded all could quickly travel to their suburban posts. The Mayor thought that was the only solution to the problem. It would mean a considerable allocation of petrol, but if petrol could be allocated it should be. given for that purpose to the cities most likely to be attacked. But it must be available for daily running. The only other thing would-be to have a permanent skeleton E.P.S. staff manning all posts all the time, as in England. There would be no trouble in ..getting E.P.S. personnel from the suburbs to the city in emergency, for people had their cars at home and E.P.S. members would have their twogallon tins of petrol there.
