SPLENDID FORCE
DEFENDERS OF JAVA
MORALE STANDS HIGH
LONDON, February 24. Enemy air activity over Java i has included raids on the fields j and reconnaissance over the outer provinces. Military objectives were bombed in western Java this morning, but anti-aircraft defences gave the enemy a warm reception, shooting down one bomber and damaging others. Another bomber was probably shot down elsewhere. The magnificent morale of the Dutch forces and civilians awaiting the Japanese in Java has been described by Renter's correspondent ai Army Headquarters. He says that the Japanese will meet men who know every track in the island and have an age-long experience of jungle warfare behind them. They are trained to live on the country and need few supplies. The Dutch authorities have decentralised the defences and administration so much that enemy infiltration should be most difficult.
The correspondent says that the army in Java will fight; to the last.
