DEATH OF "STARKIE"
The death is reported from Auckland of James Douglas Stark, one of New Zealand's best-known ex-service-men, popularly known as "Starkie." Famous for his daring in the last war, "Starkie" showed reckless courage that made him one of the most dangerous oi the devil-may-care spirits that roamed in "no-man's land," where he performed many astonishing feats. His death occurred in the Auckland Hospital, after a week's illness. He was 45 years of age, and is survived by his wife and two children.
His many exploits during the war. in which he served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France, accounted for his being recommended on a number of occasions for decorations, Including the V.C.
