GROCERY SHOPS

FEMALE ASSISTANTS

The rates of wages payable to female shop assistants in the grocery trade are affected by the Grocery Trade Labour Legislation Suspension Order, 1942, issued last night.

A 'female assistant commencing at the trade under the age of 20 years is to be paid up to the age of 20 years in accordance with the scale of wages specified in the grocers' assistants award in force in the district concerned, but on attaining the age of 20 years she is to receive a minimum wage of £3 17s a week, and on reaching the age of 21 years and thereafter she is to receive a wage of not less than £4 7s a week. A female assistant commencing at the trade at the age of 20 years or over is to be paid not less than £3 weekly for the first six months, £3 7s weekly for the second six months, £4 2s weekly for the third six months, and £4 7s weekly thereafter.

These rates are subject to the provisions of the general order of the Court of Arbitration granting a 5 per cent, increase and to any other general order which may be made by the Court under the Rates of Wages Emergency Regulations, 1940.
