SHORTAGE OF STAFF
POWER BOARDS' PROBLEM
Shortage of, man-power is seriously affecting the.. ability .of electric supply authorities to carry out the regulations.
Mr. E. F. Hollands, engineer and general manager of .the Hutt Valley. Board, advised his board yesterday that it was impossible to make the necessary inspections.of .installations to see that they were in order.
Mr. S. Blackley, chairman of the board, said the association . had for months past been trying to get relief from the responsibility of, making a five-yearly inspection ,of . all installations, as the staff was not available. The position now was that the board might be held liable for damage resulting from.a defect, if the inspection had not been made.
Mr. Hollands said a claim was now being held against a board on the allegation that the inspection had not been made; the position was very serious.
The chairman said that power boards, having been graded A .in the list" of essential industries, might have to apply for : members of the ■ staffs ■to be released from military duties and he hoped the board would back up the general manager in any appeals he made. , ■ : . ' ' . '. ■..'■':
