Soviet reports of fighting on the central front (where the Germans said that Russian troops who had broken through towards Vyazma from the south-east had been mopped up) state that the Germans tried to straighten out the Russian wedge and to surround the advanced Russian troops. The heroism of the Russians in repulsing the attacks is praised. The Germans attacked .forward points and the flanks of the wedge, and in doing so lost 400 officers and men killed.

The Russians claim further local progress in the Leningrad area.

Moscow announces the continuance during the night of active military operations against the Germans and Fascist troops. Progress was made yesterday in two sectors of the central front. Several blockhouses were captured, and German efforts to stop the advance failed.

According to Berlin radio, the Germans recaptured the railway stations Of Chuduv6, Bologoe, and Vyshni Volochek on the Leningrad-Moscow line, where they claim to1 have completely surprised the Russians by using new and particularly fast tanks, which assisted in the reoccupation of Vyshni Volochek.-^-8.0.W.
