PORTUGUESE DIFFICULTIES

New petrol restrictions have virtually brought to a standstill private motoring in Portugal. Portuguese economy was based on the assumption that supplies would be maintained from abroad, and no serious attempt at storage was ever made. Now that merchant traffic is being cut down more and more, Portuguese finding increasing difficulty in maintaining its economic life, apart from colonial food supplies.

Fuel is the most immediate problem. Already a number of industrial enterprises have closed for lack of fuel. The railways are running skeleton services, and domestic heating is no longer possible.
