GENERAL ORDERS
WAGES UNDER AWARDS
EXCLUSION OF PART
Under the Rates of Wages Emergency Regulations, 1940, the Court of Arbitration, on the application of any industrial union or association of employers or workers, was given the power to amend by general order the rates of remuneration provided for in all awards and industrial agreements. An amendment to the regulations was issued last night giving the Court authority to exclude portion of the weekly remuneration of workers from the scope of a general order made under the regulations.
The effect of the amendment is that the Court is now empowered, should it think fit, to grant an increase or decrease on part only of workers' remuneration. For example, the Court may in the case of a man receiving £6 a week order an increase or decrease in l-espect of part of that sum, notwithstanding that the worker may be receiving wages in excess of the minimum award rate.
The amendment, also gives the Court authority to vary the amount so excluded in the cases of female workers, junior workers, and apprentices. Remuneration is defined as actual earnings, including time and piece wages, overtime, and any other special payments.
