ANNOUNCEMENT BY CHURCHILL
LONDON, February 17. , '< The Prime Minister announced in the House of Commons that a secret inquiry began yesterday into the escape from Brest of the German warships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and Prinz Eugen. Mr; Churchill said it was hoped to complete the inquiry within a week.
Mr. Justice Bucknill, who held the inquiry into the loss of the submarine Thetis before the war, is presiding, and the Services are represented by Air Chief Marshal Sir Edgar LudlowHewitt and Vice-Admiral Sir Hugh Binney. Mr. Churchill added that there was no doubt that the naval position in the Atlantic, so far from being worsened, had definitely improved.
