MR. HEPBURN'S CHARGES
WASHINGTON, February 16,
The Canadian Government is reported to have expressed regret to the United States over recent utterances'1 by the Premier of Ontario, Mr. Hepburn, who made the charge in two public addresses that the United States Navy in the Pacific was hiding from the Japanese. , It was explained that the expression of regret did not constitute a formal apology, since Mr. Hepburn was not a member of the Canadian Government, but merely a provincial Premier. However, Canadian officials emphasise that few Canadians sympathise with Mr. Hepburn's views.
