AWARDED D.F.C.

NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN

(Rec 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 17. Pilot Officer Maechel Anthony Ensor. R.N.ZA..F., has been awarded the D.F.C.

The citation states that one night in, January Ensor and an observer, Sergeant Paige, Royal Canadian Air Force, who receives the D.F.M., observed a convoy of three ships in enemy waters. Ensor attacked the leading ship from mast height, scoring direct hits. In an evasive lowaltitude action, the plane struck a rock, which put out of action the starboard engine, instruments in the turret, and the lights. Ensor regained height in a heavy snowstorm. '

Later the plane was attacked by anti-aircraft guns -over enemy territory, but Ensor piloted it towards the sea and proceeded to his base, using one engine, and made a forced landing safely.

Pilot Officer Ensor is the son of Mr. Hugh Ensor, of Rangiora. He was born at Rangiora in 1922 and educated at St. Andrew's College, Christchurch.
