BALLOT CHARGES

SENTENCE NEXT WEEK

In the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., Henry Joseph August Berthold, clerk, appeared for sentence on seven charges of wilfully deceiving the Director of National Service by removing ballot cards from the register; John Lampnt Howard, musician, appeared for sentence on two charges of offering a bribe to Berthold and one of failing to report for military service; Hubert Edward Howard, Trentham Camp, and Francis Joseph Dwyer, hotel manager, each appeared for sentence on one charge of offering a bribe to Berthold. In all cases a remand to next Tuesday, February 24, was granted. Senior-Detective P. Doyle said that two more cases would definitely come on next Tuesday. Mr. W. G. L. Mellish, counsel for Berthold, applied fdr bail, which was refused. "I think he had better stay where he is," said the Magistrate. Mr. R. I. M. Sutherland, counsel for J. L. Howard, opposed the remand in the case of his client. Howard, he said, originally came before the Court charged with failing to report for military service, and he had pleaded guilty to the charges with which he was faced. He saw no reason why the imposition of sentence should be delayed. "I think there is a very good reason," said the Magistrate. "This is a series of charges, and I think they should all be cleaned up and dealt with together. I may be wrong, but that is my opinion." Counsel then referred to the length of time spent in gaol by J. L. Howard. "Any time he h<*s been in gaol will be taken into consideration when he is dealt with in these offences," said the Magistrate. '■''..
