ASSAULT ON HALFAYA

INTENSE BOMBING

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 9 a.m.) LONDON, January 8.

The Air Ministry announced that Royal Air Force and Free French bombers have been attacking Halfay a all day long, at 15-minute intervals, for the past three days, plastering defended posts and entrenchments and also masses of transport in wadis. They are meeting with practically no opposition from Axis fighters, and only occasional flak fire.

This bombing is similar to that before the final storming of Bardia.

Reuters special correspondent says that Halfaya is also being shelled from land and sea, every point of military value being pounded.

An Army, liaison officer who was enthusiastic about the work of the Blenheims in preparation for the capture of Bardia, said: "The pounding of Halfaya is keeping the enemy underground, preventing them carrying on the supply system to troops in entrenchments, and spreading devastation and destruction within the area." Defended posts and entrenchments are being plastered, and masses of transport, which can be seen in wadis, are also being given special attention.
