U.S. EXPECTATIONS
LONDON, January 8,
The latest communique from Washington reports that a new : large-scale attack by the enemy in the Philippines is expected in the near future. . In the Philippines, the communique says, fighting of varying intensity is reported from all sections of the front. These operations are probably preparatory to a large-scale general attack by the enemy. Japanese reinforcements are being! brought up, and the indications point to a renewal of the enemy offensive. For the first time for several days there have been no enemy air raids on the fortifications in Manila Bay, and air activity has been confined to reconnaissance. TROOPS' MORALE HIGH. The communique includes a report from General Mac Arthur that the morale and determination of the American and Filipino troops is high, and that they may be counted on. to continue their resistance with skill and courage. . An earlier Washington message said General- Mac Arthur had informed the War Department that American casualties in\the Philippines were not unduly heavy. He said that Japanese casualties exceeded those suffered by the American and Filipino units.
