TALKS BOUND TO FAIL
UNITED STATES ABUSED
TOKIO, December 2.
The vernacular Press, under banner headings, sports that British troops are massing in Burma and that a state of emergency has been proclaimed in the Netherlands Indies, Malaya, and Hong Kong.
At the same time there is mounting pessimism expressed editorially regarding, the outcome of the Washington negotiations.
The "Nichinichi Shimbun" says: "We appreciate the Government's last effort to make peace with the United States. However, it is futile to listen to any more of the Americans' hypocritical peace talks." The "Asahi Shimbun" says: "We are deeply impressed with the fact that the negotiations are speedily heading towards a finale without any hope of success."
The "Miyako Shimbun" says: "For Japan to carry on conversations with ths United States virtually amounts to travelling with a group of hijackers whu have covetous eyes on our purse."
The deputy official spokesman, Mr. lichi Kishi. said: "There, is a fairly big difference of opinion; however Japan is hopeful and therefore she is •continuing the Washington . negotiations."
The Domei news agency's Vichy correspondent reports that an authorised spokesman indicated that France "would not oppose Japan in the event that the latter uses Indo-China as a base for operations, against. Powers threatening Thailand^ security."
France would always examine the situation surrounding Indo-China realistically.
