It is announced in Tokio today that the Japanese Cabinet has decided to increase taxation so as to restrict the purchasing power and consumption of the Japanese people.

A spokesman said that the plan was designed to avoid inflation of a vicious nature. Drastic new taxes will be imposed, especially on luxuries.

The Finance Minister, Mr. O. Kaya, announced a 50 per cent, tax increase on the comniqn drink of Japan, saki, 100 per .cent, on mah jong, and 20 to 80 per cent, increases on cinema and theatre tickets. Taxation on railway; tickets is also to be increased.

The Governor-General of the Japanese island of Formosa. has recommended the complete fortification of the island.
