GLOOM IN ITALY
PEOPLE BECOME RESTIVE
NEW YORK, September 17,
Highly-placed Americans returning home from Italy paint a gloomy picture of conditions in Italy.
They say that Benito Mussolini is a sick and disappointed, man. He is reported to be living in semi-seclu-sion surrounded by. members of the Gestapo.
The Italian people are openly saying they would prefer to become a British rather than a German colony. The Italians are keen listeners to the 8.8.C., which gives them all the news. Their own stations dole out small, inspired bulletins.
Food everywhere is rationed, and clothing and shoes are almost unpurchasable by the average peasant.
