WELLINGTON'S WIN

9-2 OVER CANTERBURY

PLAY IN THE RAIN

Though -Wellington beat Canterbury by 9 goals to 2 in the final representative Asso-ciatidn-football match of the season on the Basin Reserve on Saturday, there was not •that much difference between the teams, and< the game contained plenty of Interest for the spectators. There was no trophy at stake. The reason for Canterbury's overwhelming defeat was that they were unable to field their best team, because of a local cup final, and sent instead an- eleven of less experienced players, most of whom were making their first appearance before the Welllntrton public. Wellington's teani,; on. the other hand, was well up to F. A. Trophy standard, and indeed stronger than the side from which Canterbury took the trophy by 6 goals to 3 a few weeks ago., • , :. ■■~-■/' The game vras played on - a sodden ground, with heavy rain falling intermittently, from just before half-time to the end. Play suffered accordingly, but it was far from .being' poor and uninteresting, Wellington's forwards were in fine fettle, and, closely supported by intelligent halves, they showed what can be done in the way of goal-getting by competent and persistent attack. Shankte, of Swifts, the inside-left, who scored five goals, and B. Yeoman, the Seatoun centre-forward, who •cored four. goals, were the leaders of - the Wellington attack. Backs and goalkeeper had less to do than usual, but did it well.

. Canterbdry's, attack lacked the sting shown by the last Canterbury team that was here, 4nd,-the principal strength of the team lay in (defence.. But even there they were no match: for their much more experienced opponents. Still; tliey: played gamely and at full steam until the end, and they showed the Wellington players and the public that Canterbury has a solid first-line reserve of Soccer talent. Kenny v and Hughes were .their scorers, both in the first half, the interval score being 4-2.-. . -..■.

The referee was Mr. J. Sanderson
