PRESS APPROVAL

UNITED STATES AND RUSSIA

PRACTICAL COLLABORATION

LONDON, August 17.

Newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic give special prominence today to the message sent to M. Stalin by the President and Mr. Churchill. The New York "Herald Tribune" says it is a realistic contribution to the freeing of Europe from Nazi military domination. The Russian people, the newspaper adds, have already given magnificent co-operation towards that objective, and they deserve whatever material assistance Britain and the United States can furnish.

1 The Moscow "Pravda" hails the pracI tical collaboration of the three Powers ;as a great political defeat for Germany, ; but the newspaper recognises the dangers ahead and the enemy's great strength and cunning, and accordingly gives a good welcome to the proposition that experts from Britain, the United States, and Russia should meet in Moscow.

The "Isvestia" says that the effect on the Nazi rulers of Germany has been so severe that the German Press has been ordered by Dr. Goebbels to attack the anti-Nazi coalition, but, says the "Isvestia," it cannot conceal the dreadful truth from the German people that the progressive forces of the whole world have united against them.

The "Red Star" also welcomes the assurances contained in the message, and says that the assistance which the United States and Britain intend to render the Soviet Union will help to smash Hitlerism by their joint efforts The Russian people, it is pointed out, have many dangers ahead, and it is all the more important, therefore, to ensure timely co-ordination of effort in this struggle.

Japanese newspapers express disappointment with the proposal. The "Nichinichi Shimbun" urges the Russians to reject the plan, and repeats the old charge tha* it means eventual encirclement of Japan. .
