ENTERTAINMENT FOR MEN ON LEAVE

"V FOR VICTORY" DINNER

Men of the forces flocked to the various Service Clubs, at the weekend. Flags of the Allied countries were the chief decorations at the "V for Victory" dinner served at the Cinderella Club on Sunday evening. Other prominent features were large V's of lauristinus made by Mrs. A. M. Branson, and tables placed in the form of a V carried broad, streamers of red, white, and blue. In keeping with the theme, typical English fare such as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, and colonial goose and plum pudding featured on the menu. A most enjoyable evening of games, community singing, and dancing followed. The

four-piece orchestra, led by Mrs. G L. Allan, Was very popular with the 'dancers. Members on duty over the weekend were Mrs. M. Henderson. Mrs. P. W. Maddock, Mr. F. Arbon Mrs. Haughton, Mrs. A. M. Branson, Mrs. M. Simpson, and Misses L. Rigarlsford, M. Roy, S. Roberts, and H. Sullivan. HELPERS CONTRIBUTE TO CATERING. At the Y.W.C.A. helpers in the cafeteria were members of the Khan-, daliah and Wellington Croquet Associations, the Rona Bay Canteen group, and the St. Andrew's ladies' Guild. The donations contributed-by these helpers were especially generous 'and assisted the catering considerably The service on Sunday was conducted by the Rev. J. Churchill. A delightful programme, arranged by Mrs. J. Hastings, comprised violin solos by Miss Ida Lockwood, vocal solos by ' Mrs. Young, and sketches by Mrs Hastings and Mr. R. Nelson. Mrs. Bird and Mrs. Chas. Macdonald were accompanists. • • MUSIC AT THE V.M.C.A. The membei'S of the V.M.C.A. Girls' Auxiliary, with their president, Miss Mavis Burnley, were hostesses at the V.M.C.A. soldiers' tea yesterday. The chairman, Mr. R. H. Nimmo, was present, and a special guesi was Lieutenant Gladstone Hill. Features of the programme were duets and solos from "Rose Marie" sung by Mrs. Merle Gamble and Mi*. Trewern. Other vocal items were also given by these two, and elocutionary items by Mrs. J. Halligan, and a whistling solo by Corporal Charles Cathcart, R.N.Z.A.F. The accompanists were Coder J\j, Buchanan, R.N., and Mr. W. Mann, and the community song-leader Mr. Hindle. The birthday cake for men whose j birthdays take place this month was j cut by the president. It was made and iced by three girl members to represent the three arms of the forces. j A REQUEST FOR GIFTS. A generous friend of the A.N.A. Club is paying for the x-enovation of a couch and two chairs, but still mox'e couches and chairs are urgently needed for the lounge, and the executive would be very grateful for such gifts. This club is open all the week to men of the services, and is a busy centre. The cafeteria was particularly busy last week and over the weekend, and the catering committee wishes to acknowledge the many gifts of provisions, including hampers from the recentlyformed committee of Marton women (per Mrs. Duncan Simpson), Masterton Countrywomen's Club (per Mrs. Donald -James), and Mangapakeha branch, W.D.F.U., Masterton; a donation from Air Force relations, Wanganui (per Mrs. Gifford Moore); and a carton of home-made jam from Mrs. E. B. Gox^don, Marton. A group of Lower Hutt women, members of "the Victoria League, English-speaking Union, A.N.A. helpers, Air Force relations, and A.N.A. girls' auxiliary, gave assistance in the cafeteria, and the Misses Mildred Cardale, Barbara Phelan, Diana Brodie. Rita Thomson, and members of the girls' auxiliary were in charge of the dances at the weekend. AT THE NATIONAL CLUB. ,The National Union tea dances, held at the National Club on Saturday evenings, are. always a popular rendezvous for servicemen. .Last Saturday over 200 were present, and enjoyed a hot dinner, or. buffet tea, when the hostesses, Misses Shirley Spiers and Josephine Russell, were joint conveners of the group of girls who assisted Yesterday over 100 men of the Forces enjoyed the amenities of the club, where hot meals were prepared and served by members of the Wellington East electorate, convened by Mrs. H. E. Av.ery. "ROSE MARIE" ITEMS AT SPINSTERS' CLUB. | Many men on leave from the camps were entertained during the weekend at the Spinsters' Club, which was decorated with spring flowers. On Sunday the guests thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment, which included items from "Rose Marie" given by members of the company. Included were the Red and White Ballet, songs by Mr. John Linaker, operatic dance by Miss Ngaire Harrison, and contortionist item by Miss Joyce -Smith. Miss Eva Moore, the producer, told humorous anecdotes. The accoxixpanist was Miss Gwenyth Greenwood. Musical items were also given by Mrs. Chas. McDonald and Miss Ida Lockwood.

A reception will be given at the National Club, Featherston Street, tonight, in honour of the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who has returned from Canada and the United States. All members are invited to be present.
