News lias been received from London that the Duchess of Devonshire has been appointed to take over the chairwomanship of the Victoria League, succeeding her sister, Lady Harlech. The Duchess of Devonshire has travelled extensively throughout the Dominions.

Mrs. S. G. Thompson, who is well known in Wanganui as an : elocutionist, left at the weekend for Wellington, and will make her future home here.

Mrs. John Scott, Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, is spending a few days in Weir lington, and is staying at the Empire Hotel.
