Snow; rain, hail, and sleet gave Canterbury its first taste of real winter 1 weather today. v After two days of rain and snow a 1 south-west storm developed to its • fiercest • degree throughout last night ■ and showed no sign of abating at mid- ' day. ■ Very rough weather was experienced 'by the inter-island express steamer • Maori at Cape Campbell but she had made a smart passage across the strait 1 and she. arrived at Lyttelton at 8.25 a.m., although she was half an hour 1 late in leaving Wellington. There are heavy falls of snow in the 1 hilly parts of the province, particular;ly Cass and Bealey. making the Arthur's Pass route to the West Coast almost impassable. Banks Peninsula ; also was swept by the snowstorm. ' Twelve inches of snow is lying on the hilltop on the road to Akaroa. Snow is also reported to be lying at many places in Mid-Canterbury and North Canterbury. It fell steadily from the early hours of the morning to about 10.30 at the Burnham military camp, where there was a coating about 2 inches deep. C.J.C. FINAL DAY POSTPONED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. : The'heavy rain, accompanied by sleet and snow, during the night caused postponement of today's races at Riccarton. The committee will meet later to fix the new date. All the Rugby, hockey, and basketball matches have been postooned.
