(P.A.) HASTINGS, July 8. A defence that the defendant had no intention of avoiding his obligations for military service, and that the offence had arisen through misunderstanding of what was required of him, was advanced by Mr. E. J. W. Hallett on behalf of Martin. Leo O'Neill, dairy farmer, aged 39, when O'Neill pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court, Hastings, to failing to enrol under the National Service Regulations. : In fining O'Neill £10, with 10s costs, the Magistrate, Mr. Miller, said this excuse had been offered so often in court that there seemed no reason why single.men should.not know the position.
