UNIONIST'S CHARGE

ALLEGED THREATS

POLICE INQUIRING

An indication that the police take a serious view of alleged threats by Communists and will prosecute if there is evidence substantiating charges made was given today by the Commissioner of Police (Mr. D. J. Cummings) ■when a statement was shown to him by a "Post" reporter. This statement, made by a union member, alleged that he and other members of the union had been threatened by Communists.

The statement was made to "The Post" by a member of the Carpenters' Union, who took a prominent part in securing the rescinding of the antiwar motion, proposed by representatives of the union at the' recent conference of the Federation of Labour. In his statement he condemned the activities of Communist members of the union. He alleged that these Communists had issued threats against him and other anti-Communist members of the organisation. Some of them had been told that they would be hounded out of their jobs if they did not "behave themselves."

The Commissioner of Police (Mr. Cummings), when the statement was brought under his notice, said that the matter had been reported to the

police, who were investigating it.

"If there is evidence to support the complaint made," added Mr. Cummings, "the police will have no hesitation in prosecuting those responsible for the threats."
