PETONE COUNCIL

DEPUTY MAYOR ELECTED

The first meeting of the newly-elected Petone Borough Council, held last night, elected Mr. Alex. M. Macfarlane to the position of Deputy Mayor of Petone. There were no other nominations, and the motion, which was moved by Councillor A. G. Steffensen and seconded by Councillor V. A. Noble, was carried unanimously. The Deputy Mayor's position is of special importance because Mr. G. London, who was re-elected Mayor without opposition, is on service with the forces overseas.

Mr. Macfarlane briefly thanked his fellow-councillors, and expressed the hope that he would receive their fullest co-operation. He hoped that Mr. London would soon be back to carry on his duties in the borough.

Mr. Macfarlane was born in Petone in 1907, and served as assistant master in the three Petone schools, Central, West, and Wilford. After being for a time on the staff of the Clyde Quay School, he has been acting headmaster for the past six months at Taita. He has had five years' service on the council and three on the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, and has topped the polls every time he has offered himself as a candidate.

During his last term of office, Mr. Macfarlane was chairman of the bylaws committee and a member of the works and appeal committees. He is an executive member of the Hutt Valley Branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, and of the Wellington Hockey Association. Mr. Macfarlane volunteered for overseas service, but, not being accepted, he joined the local E.P.S. organisation.

The following committees were approved:.' Reserves, Councillors J. R. Gaynor, H. Green, J. Huggan, and R. Anderson; Works, Councillors V. A. Noble, J. Cumming. A. G. Steffensen, and R. Fox. Mr. Macfarlane is ex officio a member of both committees.
