RECRUITING DRIVE

MORE MEN FOR A.I.F.

MOBILE UNITS IN USE

FOOTBALL GROUNDS

COMBED

(0.C.) SYDNEY, May 17, Australian Army authorities have launched a fleet of mobile recruiting units on an intense drive for A.I.F. recruits. First of these went into -action at Sydney suburban football grounds and playing fields last weekend, and the response was officially described as "very encouraging." The completed unit is built into a specially designed, motor truck. It carries a recruiting staff with full authority to answer all inquiries. Application forms may be filled in and lodged with the mobile unit staff. Recruiting officials announced their intention to send these units oui whenever and wherever it was known that a reasonable crowd will be gath ering. Last week the units parked outside gateways leading to ovals where major matches were being played. •In future, however, the units will seek permission to park inside the enclosures. Race meetings will also be attended. The mobile units will visit suburban centres on late shopping nights. In this way, it is proposed to comb the entire Sydney metropolitan area by placing recruiting facilities virtually at every man's back-door. VISITS TO OUTBACK TOWNS. When the local drive has been com pleted the units will leave Sydney on a tour of country centres. An advanced staff is at present preparing the way for the country visit. Its itinerary includes visits to 280 outback towns. The units will call at isolated villages where young men have no reasonable opportunity of making contact with recruiting officers without a special, and in some cases costly, visit to one of the larger centres. Under the mobile recruiting unit plan, applications accepted are forwarded to command headquarters The recruits are then notified by post where and when to apply for mcd! oal examination. Those passed are subsequently issued with call-up notices and free rail warrants to carry them to camps.
