ISLAND OF CHIOS

NAZIS CREATE SUFFERING

(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 19. Reports from the island of Chios depict an unbearable situation, says the Istanbul correspondent of "The Times." The islanders are starving because the Germans have requisitioned all livestock, and bread is unprocurable. The invaders also requisitioned beds, bed linen, and blankets. Doors of houses must be left open at night. Despite a German warning that islanders must not leave under pain of death, many are secretly reaching Turkey.—U.P.A. The island of Chios is one of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea nearest to Turkey. It is west of Smyrna and is about eight miles from the coast of Asia Minor.
