SITUATION IN IRAK
BRITISH GAIN NEAR BASRA
GERMANS WORSTED IN AIR FIGHT
LONDON, May -18,
Today's Cairo communique, reporting on the campaign in Irak, says that the situation at Basra and Habbania remains calm.
It was learnt in London today that last Tuesday British forces occupied a position 25 miles south of Basra without incident.
A report comes from Irak that two Gladiator fighters and two Messerschmitts had an encounter in which both German machines were destroyed. The Gladiators then machinegunned motor transport.
The aerodromes at Raschid and Mosul were bombed by British aircraft, and one large German machine was set on fire and another badly damaged.
