GERMANS IN GREECE

INFLUX OF PLANES

BUILDING STRONG AIR FLEET

LONDON, May 18,

German land forces in Greece are withdrawing northward, simultaneously with an influx of German aeroplanes to Greece. The Germans are building up a strong air force in Greece with a view to operating against Crete, Cyprus, the Middle East, and possibly to support a renewed push in North Africa.

It is learned.that there has been considerable air activity in Crete. Malena and Heraklion were bombed by the enemy, but no damage or casualteis were caused. Five enemy planes were brought down.

Axis sources in Istanbul declare that the German Ambassador, Herr yon Papen, has offered Turkey some Greek islands off the Turkish coast if Turkey will co-operate, with the Axis.—U.P.A.
