A POPULAR FIXTURE

OTAKFS WINTER

HORSES IN LIKELY FORM

One of the most popular provincial fixtures of the season for Wellington sportsmen is the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting, and there is every promise of a very successful return from this year's gathering tomorrow and on Monday. The card of seven events for tomorrow has filled most satisfactorily, though the usual maiden division has not been required, and the form disclosed should have a valuable bearing on the numerous meetings that will follow on the winter circuit. Last year the Otaki Club held two separate winter fixtures, one in May and the other in June, but the two days together offer rather better attraction for quality fields. It is pertinent to recall, however, that even the separated days last year gave two winners, Chat and El Meynell, who went on to win the Wellington Steeplechase and the Trentham. Hurdles respectively on the opening day of the Wellington Meeting, while another winner, Winsome Lv, was the unlucky horse in the W.R.C. ParliamentaryThe course is in excellent order at present, though it will probably be on the easy side. Wellington patrons may travel tomorrow by trains leaving at 8.30, 9.5 (special), and 10.15 a.m. STRONG IN CLASS. i The main event tomorrow is the Raukawa Handicap, which will be contested by a particularly strong field. Sir Crusoe and Gladynev have failed lately, but they represent class. The Monarch and Beau Ciel, who will probably both claim an allowance, are strictly the form horses, and Young Charles is a promising recruit from the hacks who won on the course last winter. Trench Law, from the Beau Ciel stable, and Sanction, from the Sir Crusoe stable, are second strings who might effect a surprise. One was disappointed not to find Autolite remaining in the Hula Handicap, but she appeared very harshly treated with 9.0, which is undoubtedly the reason why she is among the absentees. Form horses engaged include Surveyor-General, Night Eruption, Endorsement, Mittie, and Noble Fox, who will probably dispute favouritism. Because of the two days at this meeting, only a hurdles is run on the first day, with the steeples reserved till Monday. The field for the Tararua Hurdles contains some promising material, and, though Eupatrid has the recent form, there is fresh material that may worry him, in particular the novices Raana, Master Cyklon, and Arabic, if they can jump. Sunee, Baron Bold, Golden Memory, Harbour Bar, and Selkirk are others, with experience, who might well be in at the finish. FORM AND CARD.
