THE HEAVIEST YET
MUCH DAMAGE TO PROPERTY
MALTA, May 1
A large formation of Junkers and Messerschmitts attacked Malta. One Junkers was destroyed. Civilian property was heavily damaged, particularly in an important business thorr oughfare. Eight civilians were killed and nineteen seriously injured. It was Malta's heaviest raid.
Malta has been constantly raided all the week. Many flares and bombs were dropped and a number of buildings were wrecked on the previous night. A strong defence was put up by guns and fighters. The rock shelters kept the casualties low.
It is stated officially that two German bombers and probably a fighter have been destroyed in the past 24 hours over Malta. One was a Junkers 88; which was first hit by anti-aircraft fire and was then finished off by a British fighter. The crew baled out and were taken prisoner.
