A VARIETY OF EVENTS

SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERT

A variety show was presented, on Sunday evening in the De Luxe Theatre to a large and appreciative audience. This entertainment was in aid of the Retailers' Grecian Princess, Miss Angela Marcelles, who was accompanied by the Commerce Queen, Miss Patricia Luckie. They were presented to the audience by' Mr..' Garland. ViceConsul for Greece. The programme opened with the Greek National ■ Anthem sung by the Greek choir in national costume, and conducted by Miss Una Weller, organiser of the concert. Two spectacular ballets were presented by the Vedris Cathcart School of Dancing and the Miss Margaret Oates .School of DanciSgV;:giid "t/and: of Hope and Glory," an Inspiring tableau, was "featured by students of Miss Weller and the Greek Choir. Others' who .contributed to the programme were, Misses Ena Rapley, Linda Delaney, Una Weller, Valma Hunt, Waklin, Messrs. 'W. W. Marshall, S. Ridley, F. Walker, ',Wellington Choy, Alan Stewart, J. James, and Master Frank Johnson. Popular music was played by Roy Baker's. Piano-accordion Band. Others who assisted were Mesdames R. G. Caigou, Maroulis, Galvin, Messrs. F. Robb, "Tiny" Martin, and H. Weller. HUTT VALLEY CONCERT. To aid the campaign funds of the Hutt Valley Queen, Mrs. E. T. W. Love, and "Princess" Nola, a concert was held in the Wesley Hall, Lower Hutt.; A large audience enjoyed a programme of varied items given by Mesdames H. Haigh, E. T. W. Love, Millward, K. Look, N. Leibiziet, Stevens, L. Muir, C. Muir; Misses Rae Russell, Betty Silverwood, B. Hutton, T. Smith; and Messrs. H. Haigh, K. Sharp, N. Smith, T. Surtees, and Mrs.'Mill ward's-"choir. The accompanists were Mesdames Shakespeare and Merrick and Mr. L. Muir. Floral tributes, made by Mrs. Hall, were presented to Mrs. Love, her "princess," Mrs. Walter Nash, and Mrs. Andrews, Mayoress of Lower Hutt. Those who organised the evening were Mesdanies Muir (convener), Teasdill, Robinson, Bish, Heyes, and Winslade. The patriotic funds received through this effort the sum of £17 15s, including a donation of £5 from Mr. C. Crawford. EASTBOURNE LYRIC SINGERS. The Eastbourne Lyric Singers: gave a most enjoyable concert recently in | aid of the Eastbourne (Miss J,oyce Macklin) in connection with the Hutt Valley Victory Queen effort. The guest conductor was Mr. Frank Bryant, conductor of the Hutt Valley Liedertafel, and under his baton the choir rendered many delightful part songs, including a choral fantasia on national airs. This concluded with a spirited setting of "Rule Britannia," and it so stirred the audience that they spontaneously rose and joined in the singing of it. Solos were sung by Mr. Bryant, Mrs. H. M. Stuart, and Mr. Joseph Miller, and instrumental items were given by Mrs. H. Meachem (violin), Mr. Paul Magill (piano), and Mr Henry Rudolph (saxophone). Mr. Henry Rudolph, Mrs. Brady, and Mrs. Collins were accompanists. WOOLWORTH'S QUEEN CROWNED. Miss Crimp was the successful queen in the inter-branch queen carnival arranged the staffs of ■.; Wool worths (N.Z.)'j'rLimited. At the^concert and coronation ceremony which took place at the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Wednesday night and was again repeated last nigh,;,. she was crowned with due ceremony. As the final results of the voting were not disclosed until shortly before the crowning ceremony, excitement was tense among the supporters of the four competing queens, the final voting recorded being:—-Miss Crimp (representing bulk store), 5856; Miss Power (Cuba Street branch), 3840; Miss Davidson (Willis Street branch), 3676; and Miss Everard (head office staff), 3652 votes. Although the original quota to be raised by Woolworth's Wellington branches was £275, the amount raised exceeds £600, which was a splendid result, and will substantially benefit the Patriotic Fund. At the conclusion of the concert programme, entitled "Follies of 1941," Major Abel. Dominion organiser of the £1,000,000 appeal, expressed appreciation of Woolworth's splendid effort for the fund. LANTERN SLIDES AND MUSIC. An interesting lantern slide lecture and musicale was held recently at the E.S.U. rooms by Mrs. E. T. W. Love in aid of patriotic funds. The function I was held under the patronage of Mrs. Peter Fraser. A Rarotongan troupe provided songs and dancing. Mrs. Love sang a Maori song. Among those present were Mrs. Preston (president j of the English-speaking Union), Mrs. Perry (secretary), Mesdames W. Nash, Feng Wang, O. M. Shakespeare, W. Fisher, and Miss Fisher, Madame Bligh, Mesdames Teasdale, Phillips, Chapman-Taylor, and Messrs. Muir (chairman of the Hutt Valley Queen Carnival), Chapman-Taylor, Patterson, and Goodwin. Mr. Goodwin gave a short talk about Mrs. Love's ancestors and Rarotonga. Private Party. • An enjoyable party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Wood, "The Gables," Ngaio Road. Kelburn, in support of the Commerce Queen (Miss Patricia Luckie). The evening was spent in competitions and games, as a result of which the funds for the "Queen" benefited to the extent of £14 2s. The rooms were decorated with autumn-tinted chrysanthemums •and hydrangeas, and a home-made supper was served/ Miss Luckie, accompanied by Miss Cavanagh, one of her princesses, was ' present.
