The forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued by the Meteorological Office at noon today for the ensuing 24 hcurs, is for southerly to south-west-erly winds prevailing, fresh to strong at first north of Banks Peninsula and Farewell Spit, but decreasing gradually, otherwise light to moderate. The weather will be fair in western districts from Taranaki southwards, elsewhere cold, changeable, and showery, but steadily improving, probably failto fine tomorrow over much of the country
The depression centred yesterday west of Taranaki has moved during the last 24 hours to the vicinity of the Chatham Islands, and pressure is now rising rap!dly over the Dominion. Winds from a southerly quarter have new become general, and have been light to moderate in the south, but fresh to strong in exposed positions from Marlborough northwards. Heavy rain has fallen in the North Canterbury, Marlborough, and Wellington Provinces, with scattered falls in most other districts. Temperatures have been cold in the south and moderate in the' north. This morning the weather in Westland was fine, and generally an improvement was taking place.
Overcast and wet conditions prevailed in the four main centres yesterday. The maximum and minimum tempei-atures at Wellington were 55.4 degrees and 47.4 degrees respectively. There was no sunshine.
