WINIFRED'S SPEED
BEAU TIMIDE PROMISING
(By Air Mail.) (From "Vedette.")
! SYDNEY, February 7. Sydney racegoers have not been1 able to complain of lack of variety during the past few days, the Canterbury Park Meeting on Saturday being conducted in sweltering heat, the temperature reaching 103 degrees^ while the Rosebery Meeting at Victoria Park on Wednesday was held m almost wmtry conditions with drenching rain. Despite the heat on Saturday some good performances , ,were registered, one ot.the best-xbeiag^y^^'^r-.i; Watt's improving Hanncro mare vTmifred, trained by G. Price. Sne had to be ridden hard to succeed, but showed sameness and probably will win again Si better company. Winifred .was not the only successful, ■ Harinero representative, for the two-year-old colt Henchman also scored. He appears to be a colt with possibilities later on over a, distance, the only flaw being a suggestion at .times that he might not ,be over, generous. There was no lack of courage or determination. in his Canterbury Park effort, \ and that he has made a good impression, is shown by two offers of 1500-and 2000 guineas having been refused for him. ■ >. • - ■ Six owners were prepared to pay the late entry fee of £50 for«the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, and for four of them, High Caste, Gold Salute, Mildura, and the imported Dhoti, the expense appears to-be justified. This race is worth £2300 to the winner, and although all four will have to carry penalties under the intricate scale of the* race, they have earned their right to be included in the field. High Caste has a 201b! penalty, taking his weight to lOst 61b, but^Gold Salute escapes with 151b, and Mildura and Dhoti with 101b. Beau Timide, a likely Beau Pere — Timid colt, attracted jsome attention at Canterbury by rurinfig off the course at the turn and the\i finishing the closest of fourths. He has run two interesting races : and should be one of the useful stake-earners,of the autumn;
Sydney two-year-olds look like playing a big part in the V.A.T.C. and V.R.C. races at Flemington at the end of this, month and early in March. The two best fillies, All Love and Astrid, already have been sent south, and Kingsdale and Skerries are proved representatives of the colts, although their form, so far, does not compare with the display of the two fillies. Other two-year-olds, Whisper Low, Beau Port, and Silent Night also are capable of playing their parts well in the races selected for them.
