ST. JOHN NURSING DIVISION
PUBLIC DUTY AND WAR WORK
The following short summary of the work of the Wellington Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, which is given- in the annual report, is conclusive evidence of the service which the division renders to the community:—First aid on public duty, 339 duties, 273 cases; first aid not on public duty, 76 cases; removals (transpoi't). 5 cases; hospital attendances, 62 duties, 130 hours; nursed privately (not including the time of five members doing nursing aide work), 334 cases. The membership at the close of 1940 was 34. In addition to this, their normal work, the members have a great deal of war work to their credit, their patriotic activities including knitting and making comforts for the combined St. John and Red Cross patriotic committee, the regular attendance at the Red Cross rooms on Fridays in connection with work for the military hospitals, the collecting of silver paper, tinfoil, and other waste metals for sale in aid of patriotic funds, and assistance on various street days such as those for the Metropolitan Patriotic Appeal, and also on Poppy Day and Rose Day. Owing to the war more association classes than usual were held and officers and members assisted in the demonstration work at some of the classes. I THE CADETS. At the close of the year the membership of the Cadet Nursing Division numbered 56. During the year Cadets ! Joan Stevens and Miriam Deckston qualified for the Grand Prior's Badge, twenty-four cadets qualified for their second proficiency badge; and twentyfour qualified for their first proficiency badge. . . : 1 Several cadets. assisted with public duty during the Exhibition and on Anzac Day, and senior cadets had been able to render first aid on many occasions.
