INTEREST IN HOME GUARD
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Recruits for the Home Guatrd, it is said, are slow ih coming forward, Is this because details of duties, etc., are not advertised sufficiently; so that people do not know the conditions of service, or because of an apathy, that in spite of the nearness, of war, is still very marked. bMen ih the Home Guard and E.P.S. have no means of showing to the public that they are actively engaged in war work, and I personally have had the experience of being stopped in the street and asked what I was doing for'the war effort. Fortunately I wa? able to produce my armlet. I give this as an illustration of the inconvenience suffered by men who have no means of outwardly indicating their war effort. So I make this suggestion, one which I believe is carried out in Great Britain. I suggest that the Home Guard armlet be worn at all times by members, and thus serve two purposes (1) Showing the public in general evidence of their war offbrt; and (2) getting more recruits for the movement. No matter how he may deny it, the average person (even in a democracy) loves to wear some uniform or sign to distinguish him from his fellow beings, and 'the red and white armlet, with its history centred in the Homeland, must surely prove an attraction to the many young men around town who are not contributing towards the war effort. I think that this is a matter for the Central Command to take up, and it would, I am sure, produce results. —I am, etc., HOME GUARDSMAN.
