"RAISING" MONEY

DANCE PROMOTER'S OFFENCE

For raising money for patriotic purposes without > approval arid without being an' authorised collector, Charles Bernard Duffy; a' truck-driver; was convicted and, ordered to pay costs by Mr. J.|D. Stoui, S.M., in-the'Magistrate's Court'yesterday:

The police case, outlined by SeniorSergeant G. Paine, was that Duffy ran a dance at Makara on November 30, advertising it as being for patriotic purposes, but omitting to apply for official permission to do that. The dance resulted in a financial loss and there was no suggestion that Duffy made anything out of it; It was the first case of its kind'under the Patriotic Purposes Emergency Regulations. ,

The idefendant, who was now in the Territorial-' Force, said Mr. R. Hardie Boys, did ;not know that he had to get permission for the dance. The police were satisfied that there was nothing sinister in'the offence.
