SWIFT ACTION TAKEN
LONDON, January 16,
The Navy Committee of the United States House of Representatives today gave prompt and unanimous approval to the urgent navy request for authority to spend 909,000,000 dollars on 400 small vessels for the navy, and for the swift expansion of shipbuilding and ordnance plant. Today's action brought the total of navy outlay recommended in the last 24 hours to 1,209,000,000 dollars. Yesterday, the committee approved 300,000,000 dollars for strengthening the anti-aircraft defences of the'fleet.
Another snipping move is given in the news that President Roosevelt today put before Congress a formal request for authority to build 200 merchant ships. His message said that the national interests demanded this step should be taken at once to meet a possible shortage of cargo vessels.
