WELLINGTON RACES

SUMMER MEETING

FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

PERFECT WEATHER

(By "Binocular.")

The "Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting was ushered in at Trentham today on a very auspicious note, the weather being brilliantly fine and the attendance large. It was one of the most perfect Cup days in the history of racing at Trentham. Practically without exception the fields were of excellent strength, and the Cup, which carried the rich prize of £3000 and a cup valued at £100, was instrumental in bringing together an exceptionally high-class field of handicap performers. The track was in splendid order, the regular watering for the past few weeks and the rain last weekend keeping the going free of sting. Results and comment on the running to time of going to press were: — TRENTHAM HIGHWEIGHT, £350; 1 mile. 3—3-XJ, D. McDougall's br g Happy Ending, by Beau Pere—Termination, 4yrs, 9.0 (A. Jenkins) . 1 2—2— J. H. T. Duncan's b m Kotua, 9.9 (T.Tito) 2 7—ll—O. M. Good's blk g Black Musk, 10.11 (J. L. Muir) . 3 Also started: 4-4 De Friend 11.7, 9-9 Great Night 10.6, 1-1 Iceland Spar 10.3, 18-18 Sunee 10.1, 6-7 Twenty Grand 9.10, 10-10 Gold Bridge 9.8, 12-13 Boatsong 9.7, 14-17 Doctor Defoe 9.5, 15-15 War Cloud 9.5, 11-12 Arabic 9.3, 13-14 Thrasos 9.3, 5-5 Martene 9.2, 7-6 The Monarch 9.2, 17-16 Namesake 9.0, 8-8 Rose Acre 9.0. Won by a length; length. Time, lmin 41|sec. (Winner trained by B. Burgess, Otaki.) The indifferent record of favourites in the Trentham Highweight was carried further when Iceland Spar, a firm fancy, ran very disappointingly. Drifting to the rear early, he did not improve subsequently and was the whip-per-in at the finish. When the field had settled down Namesake and Great Night were showing the way, both Kotua and Happy Ending being favourably placed. There was little material change right to the straight entrance, but at the distance Kotua ran through to the van, only to be worn down by Happy Ending, who finished .very strongly. Black Musk put in a late claim for third, with Martene a somewhat unlucky fourth. Arabic, The Monarch, and Rose Acre ran creditable races. WELLINGTON STAKES, £700; w.f.a. and penalties; 5 furlongs. 7—B—E-. Ormond's b c Burra Sahib, by Bulandshar—Provence, 2yrs, car. 6.13 (W. Aitken) 1 s—3—Mrs. H. D. Greenwood's m f Salutation, 6.9 (S. Green) 2 6—s—A. McMullian's eh g Prince Plato, car. 7.1 (W. J. Stevens) . 3 Also started: 4-5 Kentucky 8.11, 1-1 Pay Roll 7.9, 9-9 Corn Prince 7.5, 3-4 Par Avion 7.3, 2-2 Varuna car. 7.3, 8-7 Golden Moon car. 6.12. Won by four lengths,*, length and a half. Time, 60sec. Winner trained by S. J. Reid, Hastings^" '•<,■.[■-•■ >•-','--*■:> .-•■*>.-•-; *_■ .-•■.-•. Winner of the Nursery Handicap at the Auckland Summer Meeting, Burra Sahib created a minor surprise when he carried off the Wellington Stakes in commanding style. He finished all too well for the other competitors and drew right away over the final furlong. Salutation momentarily looked the likely winner, but she ran about in the straight, although it did not seriously affect her prospects. . Prince Plato was always prominent but. weakened, and the firm favourite, Pay Roll, was never going like a winner. It is evident that she has had enough racing in. the meantime. Corn Prince and Par Avion did best of the others. APPRENTICES' PLATE, £300; 7 furlongs. s—6—R. J. Jeffare's b g Rakanui, by Hunting Song—Golden Opportunity, 4yrs-, 8.7 (W. Aitken) 1 I—l—-J. E. Svenson's br c Blandisher, car. 8.2 (R. Howell) 2 4—4—C. T. Keeble's eh m Dainty Dell, 8.4 (T. Redstone), 15-14,Phyto car. 7.4, 8-8 Talenta 7.8. Won by a length; half a head. Time, lmin 28£ sec. (Winner trained by J. H. Percival, Taradale.) Some delay was entailed before the field for the Apprentices' Plate was got away, and when the tapes rose the well-fancied Cheerful Lady, together with King's Toast and Kalika, were badly left. Parchment went to the front, but the field had soon closed up, and Rakanui came from eight places back to win decisively from the favourite, Blandisher, who had every chance. Dainty Dell finished well for third, Parchment weakening into four. Talenta, War Credit, and the unlucky Cheerful Lady were next. FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, £350; for two-yea^-olds; 5 furlongs. 4—3— W. A. White's br c Monetary, by Paper Money—Kakara, 8,2 (L. J. Elli^ 1 3—4— R. J. Harper's br g Imperium, 8.5 (A. Jenkins) 2 B—B—M. Millar's b f Fleche dOr, 7.? (W. J.
