SHIPPING SPACE
HEAVIER BALES PROPOSAL
The New Zealand Farmers' Union has received a reply from the Minister of Marketing (Mr. Nash) to a suggestion made by the Dominion executive that shipping space could be saved by increasing the present limit of 700tb for wool dumps. The Dominion executive pointed, out that it was possible in the North Island to get more than.3solb of wool into;, a bale and; that it was felt that inV'the interests of economy and shipping space this should be done if possible. -:\ . ; :
The Minister's reply states that the suggestion already had been.considered by the Department of Agriculture. That Department took up the matter with the' • controlling wool appraiser, the president, of the Woolbrokers' Association, the president of the Federation of Labour, and the secretary of the Ship Owners' Allotment Committee, and all those bodies considered that the proposal was impracticable. The principal objections were that as growers pressed as heavily as possible the suggestion would entail increasing the size of the pack, and, on account of the standard size of presses, difficulty might arise in making the larger balesinto double dumps with a corresponding loss of stowage space in loading vessels.
