SIX MORE MONTHS
PENALTY FOR ESCAPING
For escaping from the Wellington Hospital while he was receiving treatment during the term of a prison sentence, Hugh Matheson, aged 39, a seaman, was given another six months' hard labour by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today.
Matheson pleaded guilty to the charge, and also to stealing clothing and money valued at £2 17s lOd from N. Gibson, to stealing a suit valued at £6 10s from D. S. Lodge, and to stealing a shirt valued at 8s 6d from W. Moloney. He had nothing to say.
Matheson was serving a sentence of twelve months' imprisonment for breaking and entering, said Sub-In-spector G. H. Lambert. On December 31 he was sent to the Wellington Hospital for treatment and on the night of January 5 he stole the clothing and money from patients there and escaped. He was arrested at 3.15 a.m. next day and all the stolen property except 6s was recovered. He was still a patient in hospital. ,
