CLERICAL WORKERS
ANNUAL CONFERENCE
At the annual conference of the New Zealand Clerical Employees' Association held in Auckland during the Christmas holidays it was disclosed that nearly a thousand members had enlisted for overseas service and that many others were, on home defence. The conference representing some 15,000 clerical workers throughout the Dominion unanimously passed the following resolutions: — 1. "This conference pledges its support to the Prime Minister and the Government in all necessary measures to ensure the victory of Britain and the free nations over the Nazi and allied dictatorships. In particular, we will do our utmost to ensure that the production of goods and services in this country, essential to our war effort, is increased and maintained at a maximum." 2. "We are heartily in agreement with the recommendations of the Economic Stabilisation Conference, realising that the withdrawal of manpower from industry as a result of the war and the loss of certain imports faces us in some instances with serious shortage of goods except in so far as we can make these up by increased production within New Zealand. We know that it would be no use trying to make up for this shortage by putting into circulation paper money credit in excess of the value of the goods available for purchase, for such^ action could result only in inflation."
The conference expressed appreciation of the services of the officers of the association and of the retiring president, Mr. R. Herbert. The following officers were elected for the ensuing yean—President, Mr. T. Nuttall (Christchurch); vice-president, Mr. A. S Herring (Auckland); secretarytreasurer, Mr. W. N. Pharazyn.
