D. MARKS AT STRATFORD

'^jHyCTjWitaifflf^W

The Fordell trainer D. Marks does not often take his horses to Stratford, but he should now have reason to regard that course as specially suited to his team. He paid a visit there in the spring of last season, and he carried off five out of the eight events with Taurangi, Russian Ballet, Red Cat, Scandal, and Tuatara. His next visit to the course was for the two-day summer fixture last week, and, with a small team, he won two races each day. Red Cat and Scandal scoring on the first day and Red Cat and Ruatiti on the second day, besides which Ruatiti beat everything except Chief Lord in the Stratford Cup on the first day. •■•■.-■

This is what Mr. J. B. Connell, secretary of the Victorian Bookmakers' Council, said to a representative of the Melbourne "Sporting Globe":—"I do not think there will be the slightest effect on racing as a result of the increases in taxation. Racegoers will always find something to have a bet with. I think that some of the bigger punters will have to slow down, but there are not many of these about now. Unemployment is at its lowest for years, war industries having provided work, thus opening up new sources of income; I'm willing to wager that the tote returns in ■ the next six months will show an increase over the first six months of this year."
