E. C. McMENAMIN INJURED

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNE"*, January 2,

E. McMenamm, one of the leading riders m Sydney, was thrown so heavily at Kandwick on New Year's Day, receiving a broken collarbone, that he will be out of the saddle for several weeks. He was literally catapulted out of the barrier, the cords catching him and throwing him at least ten yards, and he landed flat on his back. For a few minutes the worst was feared, for he did not move, and the starter, .Mr. J. Gazieu, forbade anybody to touch him until the ambulance officials arrived. It was soon discovered,. however, that he was only unconscious, and the sole injury was to the collarbone. McMenamin has had an extraordinary record of falls, totalling about seventy, tout as he "commenced his career over nurdles, and later developed into a itacung ilat-race rider, this explains the unusual list of casualties. Naturally, as Skerries was a hot favourite, a fresh rider had to be found, but, fortunately, D. Munro was available and duly scored on the two-year-old, much to the relief of a small army of backers at a short price, who had serious misgivings when they saw McMenamin placed out of commission. McMenamin's misfortune provided a turn of luck for jockey F. Shean, who rode a capital race on Feminist in Tattersall's Club Cup and won narrowly. Shean has had a number of fortunate last-minute rides, and one of his most notable was Catalogue in the Melbourne Cup two seasons ago. Shean did not decide to ride the old gelding until finishing second on him in the Hotham Handicap on. the Saturday before Cup Day.
