WAIRARAPA AT BEST

DAY OUT OF BOX

LITTLE ROBIN TAKES CUP

It was a .day out of the box for the opening of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Jubilee Meeting at Tauherenikau yesterday, and there was a very large attendance. Only very heavy scratchings prevented the investments touching record heights for the club. Most of the fields were clipped by the pen to half their acceptance strength. The valuable Wairarapa Jubilee Cup, wSh £420 to the winner saw days ,at Manawatu. Respite plenty of racing he.comes up., m.6^.- jhe and he is on the way .to. earning the title of the iron horse of the year. Little Robin was at the rear for hail the trip, but then P. Burgess began to S?ve him .forward On reaching the straight he was already uP_on ™c 4uter of Gay Mimic following Gay Fox who had dashed to^ the tf front past Siglow at the three furlongs, andover thf last furlong he finished much too solidly for his opponents. Th.^ p w^ well-merited reception . awaiting him on his return to the enclosure. _ ■ Gay Fox deserved his second. Boldstep was finishing better only^haf.a lerieth off. Gay Mimic tired into Sh. Siglow marred his Prospects by pulling double out in front for over six furlongs.

AUTOLITE FAILS.

There was a prize for each horse in the-Pioneer Handicap," as only three 3 the' five acceptors went to the post. The public naturally considered it easy collecting on Autolite, but, as so often haopens in small fields, the favourite wa? beaten Autolite set out to make post a w£ ner> but too much use wae s ymade of her and Sgjietew hauled her in the straight. Autolite battled on gamely but was^ completely done. Liane could not go the hot pact set from the start.

SYNTHETIC'S DOUBLE. Four races later.,in tol R f^Jjgj: thetic'with a rehandicap of 61b, which Ke reduced below his original handicap by a 71b allowance, came out again in the Wharekaka Handicap, a hack event,:and he won it in similar styll wearing down the pagaj me Wakarara in the last furlong. WkS with the best of toe start firaee running on fourth, irisian Sowed 5a"51 the middle' stages. CHEERFUL L&DY UNLUCKY. Cheerful Lady/reserved for the open Wa?deU Handicap, was desperately .unlucky. She had the race safe when her saddle slipped just inside the last furlong and her rider was tumbled to earth. At one stage she was eight lengttis Sear of her field and she was still four lengths ahead of Rajah entering the straight, when her gear began to move. Her rider actually clung to the saddle under the mare for about fifty yards and when he finally let go he escaped hurt lhe result was that the fay^ te ' to W^! Rajah the only horse able to give any sbrt of pursuit, came on for an easy win over. Harina. •

VIVID NIGHT EASILY,

Vivid Night, who ran a clear second to War Credit at his only start at Awapuni, had the form in the Waiohine Stakes, and he won decisively at short prices. Headed off early by Lady Garvagh, he readily resumed charge in the straight and comfortably°held off Beau Ciel, who fin^hed solidly along the inner to cut down Lady Garvagh- Maharajah always well up, was fourth, followed by Callcardine (who improved fast on the turn) and Taane Pango, with a gap to H^mish and Fauvette. The Monarch was never sighted.

AN OVERDUE TURN

War Cloud had an overdue win in the Russell Highwerght but he just lasted-long enough to 'hold off: Good Sun. War Cloud owed his success to the riding of his trainer, P. Burgess who forced the others except Good Sun who was at the rear, to ao it all the way'to,'the turn, and then drove through when the three leaders went wide entering the straight. Sun also came through along the fence, and, hard ridden, he would have won in another stride. Namesake, the pacemaker, tired into third. GUNYAH NARROWLY.

rTrentham supplied all seven runners in the Bidwill Nursery Handicap, and the race enabled the Myosotis— Fortunio colt Guhyah, who has been running consistently, to open his score at the account of the Manawatu double winner, The Whipper. Gunyah was first away, and after being passed by Kevin he finished on more solidly than he has previously done to wear down Kevin and keep The Whipper narrowly at bay. It was a fighting finish, with Gunyah, The Whipper, Kevin, and Saka Bona separated by heads and necks. Saka Bona came home well on the fence, and The Whipper was out widest.

GREAT NIGHT IMPROVES,

Having her second start since coming north to T. R. George's stable and improving a deal on her effort at Awapuni last week, Great Night led throughout the Tawaha Handicap and scored decisively. She is a Nightmarch mare owned by her breeder, Mr. R. J. Murphy. Sanction, always second, just hung on to stall off Titter. who finished along, the inner to mst Counter from third. Counter had ;very chance. Piastre's excuse for a joor effort was that his rider lost a tirrup. Little Margot was best of the others.
