FALSE ALARM

SPECTACLE IN CITY

A large crowd gathered outside Levin and Co.'s Customhouse Quay premises 'this morning when three fire engines from the Central Station drew up outside amid the clamour of the building's alarm bell, b,ut it lurried out to-be a false alarm caused through a painter's ladder setting off the automatic alarm bell. Nevertheless the crowd found some diversion in an argument which took place through a locked door between the firemen outside and an unseen individual inside, the debated point being how to unlock the door when the firemen had exhausted the possibilities contained in several large bundles of keys. Determined to hear both points of view, a number of onlookers packed themselves so tightly around firemen and door that three police constables were moved to investigate. The incident ended tamely with the production of the right key. By this time two engines had returned to the station, and finding the spectacle of one idle engine of little interest, the crowd dispersed.
