Major-General Sir John Dirigan, K.8.E., C.8., D.5.0., Chief of the General Staff, arrived back in Wellington today. The Rev. K. W. McKinney, formerly of Tirau, has been appointed to the charge of St. James's Presbyterian Church, Thames. The induction will take place on January 21. Mr. Arthur Cant, accountant to the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd.» was faTewelled by the combined staffs of the company on the occasion of his retirement yesterday afternoon. Mr. Cant had completed more than 61 years of unbroken service with the company. For the various staffs the secretary of the company, Mr. R. V. White, presented Mr. Cant with a dinner service and a tea service. Mr. Cant joined the staff of the "Press" as a boy in 1879, and for two years worked on the publishing staff in the early morning arid in the. commercial office in the evening. Then he was appointed to the clerical staff and for 30 years was collector for the company. In 1916 he was appointed chief clerk. About the beginning of 1922 Mr. Cant became accountant, and has held that position since.
