VITAL U-BOAT BASE
LONDON, December 29
"The enemy submarine base at Lorient was the main objective of British bombers last night." Behind this brief official announcement is a story of one of the most concentrated and persistent attacks made by the Royal Air Force on a single target. Not only last night, but day and night for three days now British bombers have been showering high-explosive and incendiary bombs on this vital submarine base on the French coast. It is from Lorient that the Germans send their big ocean-going submarines to attack Allied shipping in the Atlantic, and the Air Ministry has already reported considerable damage there to harbour works, buildings, jetties, power plants, and fuel depots.
