FATAL ATTEMPT TO SWIM

AUCKLAND, December 22.

Jumping overboard after his vessel had left the Portland wharf and attempting to swim ashore, Frederick Smith, a seaman, aged 31, was drowned on Saturday afternoon. A member of the crew of the Miena, he was seen to jump overboard when the vessel was 150 yards from the wharf. He sank after swimming a short distance.

The deceased, who was a married man with three children, had his home in Auckland.
