SOME LIGHT RAIN

BUT A FINE WEEKEND Special forecast for Wellington: — Light and variable winds. Some light rain possible this afternoon or tonight, but the weather will be improving again tomorrow and a fine weekend is likely. Temperatures will be slightly cooler. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for light to moderate and variable winds, with directions between west and south predominating. The weather for the most part will be fair to fine. Some scattered light rain is possible at first, however, in the South Island and may extend some distance to beyond Cook Strait Temperatures will continue mild to warm north of Nelson and Marlborough and will be moderate thence southward. One of a 'series of weak westerly de- j I pressions crossed the South Island yesterday, but other/.se there has been little change in the meteorological j situation, pressure remaining high over a wide area to the north and west. North-westerly to south-westerly winds I have prevailed and have been strong j |at times in many places south of the j Auckland Province. A more definite' soutli-westerly change took place over the South Island with the advance of! the depression. There were some scat- : tered showers yesterday in Westland and in the far south, and these extended last night to a few eastern districts of Otago, Arthur's Pass recording 23 points, Puysegur Point 25, and; Dunedin 11. Elsewhere the weather has continued fine. In the South Island temperatures have become! cooler, but elsewhere they have remained mild to warm.

Yesterday's weather in Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin was cloudy. Auckland and Christchurch had moderate winds from a westerly quarter, while in Dunedin the wind changed during the afternobn to a fresh southwesterly and some showers fell. Wellington, on the other hand, had fine and sunny weather, marred, however, by a strong northerly wind which'decreased in the evening. Temperatures ranged between 66.2 and 54.6 degrees, and 13.3 hours of bright sunshine were recorded.
